Product Description

Endorsed by Jamey Aebersold, James Moody, Dave Liebman, and others, The Jazz Theory Book presents all the information any student of jazz needs in an easy-to-understand, yet thorough, manner. For intermediate to advanced players, and written by one of the acknowledged masters of jazz, it is used by universities around the world.

Review

There''s a Mark Levine book called The Jazz Theory Book. I would suggest getting it and doing two pages a day just to study it and learn to read some basic piano, even if you can only pick out one note at a time. As you work through it you''ll notice the way you hear and the way you sing will automatically start to change. ESPERANZA SPALDING --Personal correspondence

This could be the single finest music book of any type I''ve ever seen. It''s certainly the best explanation of the mechanics of jazz, and the amazing depth of the content is matched by the care and accuracy of the presentation. An invaluable resource for all improvising musicians regardless of instrument. BASS PLAYER MAGAZINE --Personal correspondence

Mark has done it again. The Jazz Theory Book has the clarity that most pedagogical books strive for. This book seems to have left no stone unturned in what one should know about the inner sanctum of jazz theory. The most fruitful information is generally derived from the source and that is the essence of this book. This book is connected to the music of our Jazz Masters. You can''t get any better than that. Even the mature musician will find information here. Truly a magnificent accomplishment. RUFUS REID --Personal correspondence

Music College or Mark Levine?

Coming from a self-taught background and having played keyboard/synth in rock bands for the past 10 years, I thought I would revisit the study of ''piano'' properly and with due diligence. There were obvious gaps in my theory and my technique had disintegrated over the years, so when researching a methodology for approaching the piano I came across Mark Levine''s ''Jazz Theory'' and found the Holy Grail. At the time I even contemplated ironing out my ''education'' by enrolling in a Bachelor of Music, however when I saw the content of this book and the robust approach it takes I knew that my plan was to devour this book; study it, apply it, absorb it, but above all, practice, practice, practice. This book is virtually a Music degree in itself. With the advent of Youtube, I can check out each jazz standard example given, played by a multitude of brilliant musicians; this also helps with technique as I can watch the pianists hands/fingers to see what they’re up to. Overall, the deal is this, and I''m applying this to myself at the moment and have done for the last 12 months; if you follow this book, page by page, review periodically, practise your butt off (3 hrs daily minimum) transpose everything into every key, and basically, suck this book like a sponge, you''ll be as good as any decent jazz piano major from any music college. Don''t believe me? Prove it to yourself by doing the following:
1. Get this book
2. Study it
3. Practise the examples in all keys
You''ll then be able to see what the difference is in 12 months’ time; your jazz knowledge and technique will exponentiate and it will blow your socks off, including your fellow musicians in your band/trio/ensemble and you’ll be a well-rounded musician.

If, like me, you are a pianist seeking to learn to improvise, this is not the book for you. Don''t get me wrong. The book might be very useful to the jazz theorist but it is head-spinning for the amateur seeking to learn improvisation. Levine''s is a top-down approach to learning, by which I mean he goes through every scale, and every associated chord BEFORE you play anything other than scales and chords. Again, not for amateurs and not very much fun.

After buying many many of them, humbly for me, if i had to choose just a few books on Jazz Theory, i would choose these:

Bert Ligon - JAZZ THEORY RESOURCES, VOL. 1 & TWO (Really complete)
Mark Levine - The Jazz Theory Book (Really good but not as complete as my first choice)
Bert Ligon - Connecting Chords with Linear Harmony (new way to think...)
Bert Ligon - COMPREHENSIVE TECHNIQUE for JAZZ MUSICIANS (Really good for practice)

Hope it will spare some time to people:)

I think the only thing that could make this book any better is if it came with CDs of all the musical examples. I have only ready the first two chapters and a lot of things have become clearer for me. I would not say this book is very the absolute novice, but if you have some theory and knowledge of your instrument as an intermediate player you will gain a lot from working through this book. It would help to be able to read both treble and bass clef (such as a piano player does) but it is not an absolute must. I am a guitarist and theory is theory. A great book to buy, it does not disappoint and it will not leave you scratching your head and tossing it to the side out of frustration.

I''m really enjoying going through this book. Much of the earlier material (in the first few chapters) is pretty basic, but I''m picking up tidbits and the review has been beneficial. For me after playing for a long time but just starting to dig into theory (with my new piano teacher), the Jazz Theory Book is proving to be a great "guide" to the relevant theory needed for learning and playing Jazz music. The concepts are well described using 3-5 bar examples from jazz standards so it is fun to play along while reading through the text right there at the piano bench.

I just received this book yesterday and I''m already hooked, it also came in two days too! Too long have I gone playing piano for jazz bands and jazz choirs not having a great understanding of music theory. I plan on going over this book during my summer vacation. This book has been recommended to me by several established guitar players, honestly, it''s going to be lots of work but as Levine said in the introduction.....only 1% is magic, and 99% is the work you put into learning jazz theory. Honestly really excited to go through this book!

This book is a true gem. It has a very pragmatic approach to the way it presents the theory behind the way the jazz greats expressed themselves and delivered their souls to us, in sequences of notes! Every point is supported by lots of examples from jazz tunes and even the most complicated and complex elements of jazz theory are made to look simple and easy. It is only after one has finished Chapter 3 that the bulk and weight of the material that has been covered becomes apparent along with the realisation that there are 21 more chapters to follow! I have several Theory Books, general, Classical and Jazz but none comes even close to this one. The absolute best. Easy to read too, thanks to the Spiral binding that allows it to stay flat. Pretty big and heavy but what can we expect, it''s 522 pages after all. Every mucisian should have this book. Now if only it had one or more companion CDs with the numeruous examples compiled... 10 out of 10.

It''s well organised, with a logical flow of material, thorough but easily comprehensible explanations and lots of well-explained transcribed examples. I''ve got the book and Kindle versions so I can always refer to it. The music is primarily written for piano and I''m a guitarist but it will work just as well for any single note instrument. If you want to play better jazz and you haven''t got this book, order it today.
