I remember seeing Julie years ago on a PBS special around the time this book was written. I liked her then and even more now.

I have been trying to get organized and it has been a losing battle. Unlike many books out, Julie doesn''t try to sell *her* method of organizing but helps you find which method will work best for you. I have been implementing her suggestions and something is finally working. It is still slow going, but at last I feel like this time I will actually make headway! I can''t recommend this book enough.

I can quite honestly say this book changed my life. I grew up in the most chaotic, disorganized household you could imagine. My mother is a hoarder, so basic organization skills were completely absent from my upbringing, and I struggled against this for the better part of my adult life. I seriously used to wonder how the "normal people" lived. It affected every area of my life, as you may well imagine.

That is, until I got this book! In here, she doesn''t teach you one system; she teaches you how to create YOUR OWN systems. She taught me the skills that my mother, God love her, never could. People now make fun of me because of how organized my spaces are, and then ask me to organize theirs! Since buying this book roughly 6 years ago, I have become one of those annoying people who are capable of keeping their glass front cabinets, shelving, and drawers in near perfect order with minimal effort. It''s absolutely crazy, but 100% true. This was far and away the best purchase I have EVER made. I recently bought two more copies to give as Christmas gifts to my mom and sister. Hopefully it will have as big an impact on them as it did on me!

I got this as an ebook, which is great because I am learning the value of having less clutter from physical books. The author has a very warm and encouraging viewpoint. She doesn’t make you feel like a loser if organization is a chronic problem for you. She encourages you to think that maybe you didn’t succeed before because you weren’t being taught how to organize in YOUR individual way. Instead of approaching things from the outside model being put ON you, she encourages you to organize from YOUR inside out. She introduces 2 main models of organizing spaces and gives examples of real people putting them into practice.

Wow, I finally found a GREAT book about the underlying reasons why we struggle so much with getting -- and staying -- organized.

Most of my co-workers think I''m really organized, but at home things were a mess. I just hid the mess inside closets and drawers. Reading this book helped me start tackling each room methodically, one area, one shelf or drawer, one little piece at a time. A key insight is that each thing must "have a place." I was constantly losing my keys, reading glasses, favorite earrings, checkbook, and cell phone -- but now after reading this book I have a designated place for everything. This makes it so easy to find them! For example, now I have one little drawer for all my reading glasses and I''ve found over 20 pair in the past couple of months that used to be scattered all over the place.

I also love the book''s idea of creating "zones" -- like a "money zone" in my office where I now keep all my financial records, checkbook, spare change, and bills to pay. I also created a "gift zone" where I keep presents and wrapping paper and boxes, a "fix-it zone" where I keep my tools, glue, and various broken things that need to be fixed, and a "play zone" for all the jigsaw puzzles, board games, and scrapbooking supplies that I like to play with in my spare time.

I really enjoyed the inner work that the first few chapters addressed, such as what are the costs of being disorganized and what would my life be like if I were organized? So many books about getting organized address only the "technique" (like divide your clutter into "keep" or "donate" or "toss"), but this one really dives deep into why it matters and how to build on what already works in your life. It made me feel increasingly successful as I continued to work through the excellent exercises in the book. I''ve only been using it for 3 months but my life and belongings are already SO much more organized, and I feel so much less stressed.

The author Julie Morgenstern makes getting organized fun and fascinating. I''ve already recommended this to many friends. Well written, funny, human, and a huge help!

Focuses on the "why" before the "how".. create a system that works for you

I am an INFP. Introverted, creative type. I prefer mentally stimulating activities over mundane physical tasks.

I have read plenty of organizing books and they have helped some; I''ve learned creative ways to store things, I''ve learned to throw things away if I don''t use them, you know.. the basics. I''ll read them and get motivated and do some organizing, but I never seem to maintain my system for very long. Then my house gets messy and the cleaning process becomes a huge task.

Enter this book. The author first helps you figure out why you have organization problems. She says organization is a learned task achievable by everyone, and that some of us just never learned how to do it. Then she helps you create a system based on what will work for you personally. You analyze whichever area you want to organize before you jump right in to the project, and this is where the book became a game-changer for me.

For those of us who love to figure things out, the creative types, suddenly the planning and strategy of creating an organization system becomes a stimulating and fun project. Since the book discusses many different types of problems that affect different people, I just read the necessary parts and the ones that applied to me and began mapping out my kitchen. I became significantly more motivated having created a plan first, because once I had the plan figured out the actual process of putting it into action went quickly and easily. Instead of moving stuff around aimlessly based on where it fits, you put things where they will work best for your personal way of living.

For my kitchen, which I started off with because it was the room that bothered me the most, I found that was able to leave half of my cabinets empty. I don''t even know what I''ll do with the extra storage space yet, but I''m sure it will come in handy.

While I was tempted to move from one room to the next, the book suggested I work on one space at a time; not an uncommon suggestion but one that I usually ignore anyway. Somehow, though, the organizational concepts in this book were so promising that I stuck to the system because I knew it would work.

On a side note: there is one part where the author mentions having no visible room on her bedroom floor as a child. Now she''s a professional organizer. As someone who also had that issue as a child, I was relieved. Anyone can learn to be organized- you just need to create a system that works for you.

Organizing from the inside out is the absolute best book on organizing I have read. I say that because it gave me a deeper understanding of what organizing actually means as well as a stratigic system that enabled me to turn my hurricanes of home and business offices into power stations of productivity and just plain enjoying being in the room! I also like the numerous examples of many organizing projects she uses to help you grasp your individual situation. Julie first teaches that organizing is a skill, but actually a very simple skill that applies to a very small or big organizing task. I thought I had a genetic defect to organization but Julie put that to rest! She then explains that a key part of organizing is not so much about getting rid of stuff which which is of course part of the process, but more about identtifying what is really important to you and then finding a home for those items. She then reveals her two secrets of organizing strategy which are brilliant and I will let you find out for yourself. I had no idea where to start to deal with my major messes but Julie''s book really leads you by the hand to accomplishing your organizing goals very fast. 5 stars!

This is the best way to organize, because it’s your way not someone else’s. It isn’t letting your imagination do it, it’s noticing how you need to do it and how to put it into play.

First off, let me say I loved this book, got a lot of ideas from it, and use it constantly as a reference. She is a great writer, and really explored some new concepts. Her reference to SPACE- Sort, Purge, Assess, Containerize and Equalize- is something that I keep in mind at all times. Before this book, I would buy containers and have no clue why I was buying that particular size or what I would put in them. I just knew I had an overflow of "stuff" and needed somewhere to put it all. Bad method.

SPACE: She taught me to first, sort, putting like things with like. Next, purge- I had duplicates of a lot of things (cosmetics, clothes, etc.) simply because I had stuff all over the place and it was all jumbled together. Assign a Home- look at what you have left over and REALLY need/want/love, designate a spot for it (in the room that you use it- duh, but that concept had previously gone over my head). Containerize- figure out the look you want for that area, what size containers you need (measure for your space! again, duh, but I had never done that before) and then buy what you need. Lastly, equalize, maybe the most important step. She was the first one to put it this way to my reading eyes- if you take five minutes a day to straighten up ("equalize") the room, put everything in it''s place, maybe do a quick wipe-down or dusting, it''ll never be problem again. Bingo.

Do I think it could have gone a little more in-depth? Yes. What surprised me is that while she did touch on the subject of getting rid of excess clutter, she really didn''t push. People will have a lot less to organize if they lose such an emotional attachment to their stuff. Maybe she didn''t want to take the chance on offending some of the more hard-core pack rats, and didn''t want to use "tough love". But I personally felt that she could have added some more about overcoming the emotional attachment people have to things they no longer need or use. For that, watching Hellen Buttigieg on "Neat" is a great inspiration, as is reading Elaine St. James'' book "Simplfy Your Life".

Other than that, this is a top-notch read, with great websites at the end of the book to help get you organized.

I have struggled with organisation all my life and after reading the first chapter which summed up the gist of the whole book, I immediately started putting the system in place and it does what it says on the tin. Only criticism is that I could have done without several of the chapters which were a bit repetitive and didn''t give much specific advice. Maybe this goes against the concept of the book which is - you have to organise your way not someone else''s but for the novice like me, it would have been really helpful to have a few case studies of how she finally did organise her client''s wardrobes for example. It doesn''t say " for kids closets, this is best..." and I could have done with that.

I would highly recommend this book for organising your home and life. It has the refreshing view that it is not all about throwing things away to create more space but the writer has a more methodical approach to organising by way of themes and knowing that there is a place for everything and everything in its place. The ideas in the book are on reflection common sense but it made me approach the task of organising in a different way. It is divided into sections for rooms of the house plus office and even down to your handbag! Highly recommended.
